General Description:

Design & build tools to specification required and set-up tools and dies to produce parts to correct specifications and make any mechanical adjustment required without technical instruction or assistance from supervisor.


Duties:

  1. 1. Analyzes variety of specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to make and repair metal working dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gages, and machinist hand tools, applying knowledge of tool and die designs and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, and lay-out, machining, and assembly procedures.
  2. 2. Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product.
  3. 3. Computes dimensions, decides on machining to be done, and plans lay-out and assembly operations.
  4. 4. Measures, marks and scribes metal stock for machining.
  5. 5. Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specification.
  6. 6. Lifts machine parts manually or with hoist, and positions and holds them on surface plate or worktable, using such devices as vices, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  7. 7. Uses hand tools, such as scrapers and abrasive stones, and power grinders to smooth flat and contoured surfaces and fit and assemble parts into assemblies or mechanisms.
  8. 8. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators, gage blocks, thickness gages, and micrometers.
  9. 9. Dowels and bolts parts together, using hand tools such as hammers and wrenches.
  10. 10. Connect wiring and hydraulic lines to install electric and hydraulic components.
  11. 11. Heat treat tools or parts.
  12. Examine standard or previously used tools or dies and decide on modifications to be made
  13. Develop specifications from general descriptions and make drawing or sketch of product.
  14. Dismantle tool & die and repair or replace parts to repair tool or die.
  15. Be required to have experience with particular kind of tools or dies in all 4 manufacturing sections (Eyelet, Press, Baird, Tuft).
  16. Observe and practice good housekeeping.
  17. Adhere to all safety rules and regulations. May be required to perform any other work as may be determined by the company.

General Qualifications:

  1. 1. Must have successfully completed an official Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship program or have had comparable work experience, plus extensive experience.
  2. Must meet minimum physical, educational and other standards established by the company.
